Two league wins in a row for Stamford Rugby!
Stamford Rugby finally played their first home game of the season and came away with a win against Dunstablians with a final score of 26 to 8.
Both teams came out to very windy conditions where they took a minute’s silence to remember Max Hunter, a Stamford player who recently passed away.
Once the game got under way it was Dunstablians who took control with two fast breaks that were quickly blocked by a strong Stamford defence. The away team were playing it central with their front row driving the attack which paid off after five minutes as Dunstablians got the first try of the game. Twenty minutes in and Dunstablians got a penalty with a kick to goal to get another three points.
Stamford defended hard and finally found a crack in Dunstablians attacking line. With five minutes in to extra time in the first half, Bruce Parker finally broke through and grounded the ball for five points. Ollie Johnson stepped up for the conversion and drove the ball from a tight angle between the posts for the two points.
The second half was a different story as Stamford took control and attacked hard, pushing the gain line into Dunstablians twenty-two. This tactic paid off and after sixty minutes, Gareth Ramsden drove through off the back of a maul and got Stamford’s second try. Ollie Johnson failed to convert but four minutes later, team captain Robbie Smith played the perfect dummy to get Stamford’s third try and with a quick conversion from Johnson brought the score to 19-8.
Dunstablians were truly on the back foot and, spotting space on the wing, Stamford got the ball to James Stables whose speed and footwork got him over the try line for that valuable bonus point. Another great conversion from Ollie Johnson gave the final score of 26-8 which puts Stamford at the top of Midland 3 East (South).
Auz Schwarz, head coach said: “I was really proud of the boys today. The quick try from Dunstablians at the start put us on the back foot but the lads communicated well, adapted the game plan and took control for the win”.
Stamford Rugby’s next league game is away to Huntingdon & District on Saturday 5th October with a 3pm kick off.
