Daisy Attley, Stamford Women’s team captain came up with the idea of a sponsored event, to co-inside with the England Women’s six nations game at Northampton Saints Rugby Club which was held on Sunday, 2nd April. Leaving Stamford at 8pm on Saturday, the team of 5 walked the planned route throughout the night with a full support crew taking it in turns to ensure the safety of the team. Daisy, along with Emily, Mackenzie, Lisa and Colin (Daisy’s father) arrived safety at the grounds of Northampton Saints around 1pm the next day - with time to spare before the big match between England and Italy.
Those supporting the team were able to follow their travels on social media, with sponsorship coming in throughout the night. The fundraising total contained to rise as they arrived at their destination, tired but ready for the game.
Daisy Attley, Women’s team captain said “I came up with this idea when I saw the ‘Red Roses’ were playing at Northampton Saints - wondering if it would even be possible, or if it was a little bit crazy. Having put the idea out it seemed others were up for the challenge and together we planned the 41 mile walk. On behalf of the walkers I would like to thank everyone who was involved in ensuring this event could take place as well as all those who sponsored us on Just Giving. We exceeded our target three times over which is more than we ever imagined.”
The new clubhouse at Hambleton Road will offer not just a brand new venue for those who are part of the Rugby Club. The committee want this to become a hub for Stamford, with activities and events throughout the year that do not just involve Rugby. The fundraising efforts have already been huge with the target ever closer thanks to the efforts of Daisy, Emily, Mackenzie, Lisa and Colin.
